Exquisite recital in Grünsberg - concert review on "Dichterliebe"

With Fortepiano and a brilliant Tenor
(translated article taken from the newspaper "Der Bote für Nürnberg-Land", 27-Jul-2004)

In the library of Grünsberg Castle an exquisite recital took place. The historic fortepiano, a Vienna model bult 1806, had been restored and tuned by Georg Ott from the German National Museum. On this fortepiano Edmund Steinberger, pupil of Toni Rosner, and Wolfgang Eckert, pupil of Peter Feuchtwanger, were featuring Robert Schumann's "Die Dichterliebe" and Franz Schubert's "Ausgewählte Lieder". In an intimate environment the enthusiastic audience could experince how those "Lieder" sounded at the times of their origin. Edmund Steinbergern's brilliant tenor comprised all facets of happiness, love luck, desperation up to endless depression. With Wolfgang Eckert he found an inspired companion together with him he formed a harmonic musical dialog.

Wolfgang Eckert sounded all tone colours of the fortepiano and was in no way to frighten by any technical difficulties of the instrument: the fortepiano for example has knee levers instead of pedals. Gorgeously presented were Franz Schubert's "Nacht und Träume", delighting through the calmness and brilliant long tones of the singer, and Robert Schumann's upsetting "Ich hab im Traum geweinet"
The audience listened breathlessly and did not let the artists go without asking them for two encores: "Dein Angesicht" and "Die zwei Grenadiere" by Robert Schumann. A successful evening all around just having deserved more attention!
